Proximity Detection/Collision Warning Information from Technical Support

MSHA and the mining industry have worked together to develop potentially life-saving technology that can stop machine motion and/or send a warning signal to the machine operator when it detects a person or object in the machine’s path.  Mine operators are increasingly installing these proximity detection systems on mining equipment in surface and underground mines to prevent pinning, crushing, or striking accidents.

MSHA Approved Proximity Detection Systems for Use in Underground Coal Mines

Title 30 Code of Federal Regulations (30 CFR) §75.1732 requires operators of underground coal mines to equip place-changing continuous mining machines with proximity detection systems.  MSHA has approved the following systems for use in underground coal mines that meet the "permissibility" requirements in (30 CFR) Part 18.  MSHA approval indicates that MSHA has determined that the system is not a spark or thermal ignition hazard in a potentially explosive atmosphere. Proximity Detection System Performance is evaluated as needed to comply with part 75 regulations.

Collision Warning and Collision Avoidance Systems

The following manufacturers have developed collision warning and collision avoidance systems for use in surface mines and metal and non-metal underground mines. MSHA Technical Support Engineers reviewed product information from these manufacturers and believes that the products have the potential to reduce certain collision related hazards. However, MSHA is not endorsing these manufacturers or their products because MSHA has not tested nor approved these products. Each mine has unique conditions and features; therefore, MSHA suggests that mine operators evaluate or test products to determine the product’s potential to reduce hazards at their mine.
