Does your operation have a full time safety person? If it does, they need to pay close attention to contractors. My suggestion to any company is "If you don't have a full time safety man, get one". At our plant, we pay close attention to contractors and their employees. For one thing, they're not as familiar with our plant and the plant terrain as our employees are. Studies show that plant visitors are not familiar with our safety rules and practices. As a result, they are more likely to break the rules than our own employees.
(MSHA Note: Mr. Hayes tip is especially relevant at this time. A third of the thirty fatalities that have occurred in the Metal and Nonmetal mines in 2001 involved contractors.)
