COAL MINE FATALITY - On Monday, September 18, a continuous mining machine operator was fatally injured by a roof fall. The miner, utilizing a remote control, was operating the continuous mining machine as the machine mined an extended-cut in a crosscut. The mining machine had completed mining the right side of the crosscut through to the adjacent entry, when the machine operator walked about five feet inby the last row of roof bolts. A portion of the roof, 12' long by 7' wide by 8" thick, fell on him causing fatal injuries.

This is the 32nd coal mine fatality in 1995. As of September 18 last year there had been 33 fatalities. This death is the third classified as ROOF FALL in 1995.
