METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On January 18, 1995, a technician with 13 years of mining
experience was killed at a copper pit. The employee was
operating a haul truck transporting a load from the pit
to the waste dump. He drove up onto the dump, turned the
truck around, then backed the truck through the berm.
The truck rolled down a 50 foot slope and landed upside
down. The victim died from sustained injuries. This is
the fourth fatality reported in calendar year 1995 in the
metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in
1994, there were three fatalities reported in these
industries. This death is the second fatality classified
as powered haulage this year. There was one powered
haulage fatality during the same period in 1994.
