METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On April 10, 1995, a mine foreman with nearly eight years
of mining experience was killed at a limestone quarry.
The employee was in the process of positioning a boom
crane to lift crusher parts at an outdoor storage area
when the boom came in contact with an overhead 13,200 volt
powerline. The victim was standing on the ground holding
the end of a cable connected to the boom and was
electrocuted. This is the 15th fatality reported in
calendar year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal mining
industries. As of this date in 1994, there were 12
fatalities reported in these industries. This death is
the first fatality classified as electrical this year.
There were no electrical fatalities during the same period
in 1994.
MSHA is prohibited by congressionally imposed budget
restrictions from enforcing the training requirements of
30 CFR Part 48 at this operation.
