METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On May 31, 1995, a contractor worker with 15 years of mining experience was killed at a limestone quarry. He was in the process of installing the belting on a newly installed tripper conveyor. He was standing on the frame of the conveyor and was not wearing a safety belt and line. He fell 42 feet to the ground and died from sustained injuries. This is the 20th fatality reported in calendar year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1994, there were 18 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the first fatality classified as slip/fall of person this year. There were two slip/fall of person fatalities during the same period in 1994.

MSHA is prohibited by congressionally imposed budget restrictions from enforcing the training requirements of 30 CFR Part 48 at this operation.
