METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On September 18, 1995, a dozer operator (contractor employee) with three weeks
of mining experience was killed at a sand and gravel
operation. The employee was operating a rubber-tired
dozer pushing trucks out of the pit. As he was backing
down the ramp, he apparently lost control of the dozer.
The dozer went over the berm and fell into the pit which
was filled with approximately 30 feet of water. The
victim drowned. This is the 31st fatality reported in
calendar year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal mining
industries. As of this date in 1994, there were also 31
fatalities reported in these industries. This death is
the fifth fatality classified as machinery this year.
There were also five machinery fatalities during the same
period in 1994.
