METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On October 31, 1995, a floor driller with five years of
mining experience was killed at a salt mine. The employee
was driving a golf cart away from the work site when a
front-end loader backing through the ventilation curtains
struck and dragged the golf cart. The employee jumped
from the cart but was run over by the wheels of the front-
end loader. The victim died from crushing injuries. This
is the 40th fatality reported in calendar year 1995 in the
metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in
1994, there were 34 fatalities reported in these
industries. This death is the 14th fatality classified as
powered haulage this year. There were also 14 powered
haulage fatalities during the same period in 1994.
