METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On December 27, 1995, a utility maintenance man was killed
at a borate mill. Two employees were elevated in a crane
basket working on an electric motor. The cable of the
crane broke dropping the employees 15 feet to the ground.
One employee was seriously injured, the other was killed.
This is the 51st fatality reported in calendar year 1995
in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this
date in 1994, there were 40 fatalities reported in these
industries. This is the tenth fatality classified as
machinery this year. There were six machinery fatalities
during the same period in 1994.
