COAL MINE FATALITY - On Friday, November 1, 1996, a continuous mining machine operator and two co-workers were located near the tail-end of the continuous mining machine. The continuous mining machine operator was directing the mining machine, mining coal from the first lift out of a pillar block. As the off-standard shuttle car was being loaded, pieces of roof began to fall. One of the miners yelled a warning and ran from the area.

The other miners ran as well, with the continuous mining machine operator being the last to run. The mining machine operator was carrying the radio remote control box and apparently fell down just after passing to the outby end of the off-standard shuttle car. As the shuttle car was trammed out of the area, the continuous mining machine operator was run over and killed.

This is the 32nd coal mine fatality in 1996. As of November 1, of last year, there had been 38 fatalities. This death is the twelth classified as POWERED HAULAGE in 1996.
