METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On January 25, 1996, a truck driver with two months of mining experience was killed at a copper pit. There were no witnesses to the accident. The victim was dumping his load when his truck backed through the berm and traveled down a 440- foot embankment. The truck rolled over at least once before it reached the bottom of the embankment. Upon impact at the bottom, the employee was thrown through the rear cab window. He died from sustained injuries. The victim was not wearing a seat belt. This is the second fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were four fatalities reported in these industries. This death is second fatality classified as powered haulage this year. There was also two powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1995.
