METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On May 8, 1996, a truck driver (contractor employee) with 20 months of mining experience was killed at a crushed stone quarry. The employee was in the process of preparing two primers by inserting non-electric caps into each of the one-pound primers. One of the primers detonated killing the victim instantly. This is the 17th fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 15 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the first fatality classified as explosives and breaking agents this year. There were no explosives and breaking agents fatalities during the same period in 1995.
