METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On August 7, 1996, a contractor cement tanker driver with 20 years of mining experience was killed at a limestone pit. He climbed up the ladder to the top of the tanker to open and grease the hatch cover hinges. He fell 11 feet from the rear of the tanker to the ground. He died from sustained injuries. This is the 33rd fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 24 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the third fatality classified as slip or fall of person this year. There were also three slip or fall of person fatalities during the same period in 1995.
