METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On September 10, 1996, a laborer with three months of mining experience drowned at a sand and gravel dredge operation. The employee was walking the pipeline from shore to the dredge when he apparently slipped and fell into the water. He was not wearing a life jacket. This is the 34th fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 30 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the fourth fatality classified as slip or fall of person this year. There were five slip or fall of person fatalities during the same period in 1995.
