METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On October 9, 1996, a laborer with 19 years of mining experience was killed at a granite quarry and plant. The employee was on the ground assisting the overhead crane operator in stacking a block of granite weighing approximately 14 tons. The employee was disconnecting the lifting cables after the block was set on top of the stack when the block slid off the stack and crushed the employee against another block of granite. This is the 39th fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were also 39 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the fourth fatality classified as falling/sliding material this year. There were also four falling/sliding material fatalities during the same period in 1995.
