METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On November 18, 1996, a driller (contractor employee) helper was killed at a gold pit. The driver of a 2 ton flatbed truck was attempting to back down an access road. The driller helper was a passenger in the truck. They over traveled the edge of the road and rolled 140 feet down a 70 degree slope. The flatbed had a 2,000 gallon water tank chained to its bed which prevented the cab from being crushed as the truck rolled down the slope. However, both victims suffered head injuries. The driver was treated and released from the hospital. The passenger died several days later from the sustained injury. Neither employee was wearing a seat belt. This is the 43rd fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were also 43 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the 16th fatality classified as powered haulage this year. There were 14 powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1995.
