METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On January 14, 1997, a crusher helper was killed at a gold pit. There were no witnesses to the accident. The employee was caught in the tail pulley of the crusher belt. The guard had been removed, and it appears that the employee was attempting to remove frozen material from the moving belt. He died from crushing injuries. This is the second fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there was one fatality reported in these industries. This fatality is classified as powered haulage. The fatality in 1996 was also classified as powered haulage.
