METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On March 24, 1997, a plant operator with 11 years of mining experience was killed at a sand and gravel operation. The operator became entangled in the tailpulley while adjusting a short belt conveyor section. This is the 18th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were ten fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 10th fatality classified as powered haulage in 1997. There were five fatalities under this classification during the same period in 1996.
