METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On April 22, 1997, a chute trapper/car loader with one month of mining experience was killed at a copper mine. There were no witnesses to the accident. The employee was assigned to pull ore from the panel on a pony set located 10 feet above the train track. He was found laying on the ground against the ore car at the track level, and it is presumed that he fell from the ladder leading to the pony set. He died from sustained injuries. This is the 24th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 14 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the second fatality classified as slip/fall of person in 1997. There were no slip/fall of person fatalities during the same period in 1996.
