METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On July 25, 1997, a truck driver, with 3 months of mining experience, was fatally injured at a traprock quarry. The victim lost control of his 50-ton haul truck, went up over a berm and over a 37-foot highwall. The truck was equipped with a seatbelt but it was not worn. This is the 41st fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 31 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 16th fatality classified as powered haulage in 1997. There were 12 fatalities classified as powered haulage during the same period in 1996.
