METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On August 28, 1997, a laborer with 1 month of mining experience was killed at an underground boron mineral mine. The victim was waiting for his haul truck to be loaded with ore. He apparently got out of the truck and was run over by a 3-� yard load-haul-dump unit which was returning from the maintenance shop. This is the 46th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 33 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 17th fatality classified as powered haulage in 1997. There were 12 powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1996.
