METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On September 8, 1997, a machinist with nearly 2-� years of mining experience was killed at a cement plant. The victim was standing on top of a bridge crane with one foot on the hoist drum and the other on the clam shell closure line drum. Due to miscommunication with the hoist operator, the hoist drum moved and he fell between the two drums. This is the 50th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 33 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 9th fatality classified as machinery in 1997. There were 2 machinery fatalities during the same period in 1996.
