METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On October 27, 1997, a dredge operator with 16 years of mining experience, was killed at a sand and gravel operation. The victim was in a 14' "jon" boat, which was equipped with a gasoline powered trolling motor that starts in gear. The narrow, flat bottom boat was not stable and he apparently fell from the boat after starting the motor. The boat was found near the dredge, going in circles. The victim was not wearing a life preserver. This is the 58th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were 41 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 2nd fatality classified as "Other" in 1997. There were 3 "Other" fatalities during the same period in 1996.
