COAL MINE FATALITY - On Tuesday, September 1, 1998, a 36-year-old truck driver who was operating a 50-ton Cline truck failed to negotiate a sharp curve on the haul road. The truck traveled through a berm and into a 20 foot deep ditch. The driver received head and neck injuries when he was thrown from the truck. He died on September 13, 1998, of the injuries sustained during the accident.

BEST PRACTICES
  • Control of your vehicle should be maintained at all times. Always operate haul trucks at speeds consistent with road conditions.

  • Always wear seatbelts when operating haul trucks. In the event of a run away vehicle, the best chance of survival is for the operator to stay in the vehicle

    • This is the 21st fatality reported in calendar year 1998 in the coal mining industry. As of this date in 1997, there were 23 fatalities. This is the seventh fatality classified as powered haulage in 1998.
