METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On May 28,1998, a 60-year old customer truck driver was injured at a sand and gravel operation. The victim had stopped his truck on the haul road and walked to the rear to check the latches, when he was struck by another truck. He died several days later from his injuries.

Best Practices

  • Commercial truck drivers should remain in their trucks while on mine property, unless a safe area for tarping and checking their loads has been designated.

  • Rules establishing safe operating procedures should be posted.
  • This is the 26th fatality reported in calendar year 1998 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1997, there were 31 fatalities reported in these industries.
