METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On August 9, 1998, a 55-year old service worker with 28 years mining experience was fatally injured at an open pit copper mine. The victim was closing a gate valve on a tailings slurry line when he fell and was asphyxiated by the slurry. Another contributing condition listed in the death certificate was hypertensive heart disease.

This is the 51st fatality reported in calendar year 1998 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries.

(Please note the 1997 final fatality count was changed from 60 to 61 after the close of the calendar year.)
