METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On February 8, 2000, a 60-year-old mine foreman with 23 years mining experience was fatally injured at a sand and gravel operation. The victim, who was scurrying to move his pick-up truck out of the way, was run over by a scraper as it was backing up.

Best Practices

  • Vehicles should not be left unattended in traffic lanes.

  • Communications must be maintained with heavy equipment operators at all times.

  • All light vehicles used in heavy equipment areas should be equipped with small diameter flexible poles with flags for easy identification.

    This is the seventh fatality reported in calendar year 2000 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1999, there were sixth fatalities reported in these industries. This is the fourth fatality classified as Powered Haulage in 2000. There were two fatalities in the same period in 1999.
