METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY -On May 9, 2000, a 51-year-old dozer operator with 30 years mining experience was fatally injured at an amethyst operation. The victim was pushing material off the edge of a hillside when the dozer slipped, turned sideways, and rolled down the hill. The victim was not wearing the seat belt and was thrown from the dozer.

  • Equipment operators should always wear seat belts.

  • Dozer operators should not operate their machines parallel to the edge of drop offs.

This is the fourth fatality classified as Machinery in 2000. There were no Machinery fatalities in the same period in 1999.
