METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On October 26, 2000, a 59-year-old maintenance mechanic with 21 years mining experience was fatally injured at a cement plant. The victim was part of a four-person work crew re- inserting a newly installed burner into a kiln. The 8½-ton burner fell and struck him.

    This is the 40th fatality reported in calendar year 2000 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. (On 8/8/2000, the Fatality Review Committee determined that fatal no. 8 on 2/21/2000 was not chargeable). As of this date in 1999, there were 47 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 11th fatality classified as Machinery in 2000. There were six Machinery fatalities in the same period in 1999.
