METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On November 20, 2000, a 43-year-old plant superintendent with 15 years mining experience was fatally injured at a sand and gravel operation. The victim fell approximately 40 feet while attempting to clear an obstruction from a chute that was located on a top landing. The entire plant was icy due to the water used in the operation and freezing weather conditions.

    This is the 46th fatality reported in calendar year 2000 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. (On 8/8/2000, the Fatality Review Committee determined that fatal no. 8 on 2/21/2000 was not chargeable). As of this date in 1999, there were 51 fatalities reported in these industries. This is the seventh fatality classified as Slip/Fall of Person in 2000. There were five Slip/Fall of Person fatalities in the same period in 1999.
