GARY R. GOMEZ
Gary began his mining career at the Stauffer “Big Island Mine” in 1972. After graduating from Utah State University in 1976, he joined the Stauffer mine rescue team and has participated in 52 Regional contests, 14 National contests, and 1 International contest. As Team Captain, Gary’s team won many regional contests and the 1982 National Contest and as Team Trainer, the teams won the 2000 and the 2004 National Contest. Gary also worked to further education and training in Mine Rescue by serving on the National Mine Rescue Metal/NonMetal Advisory Rules Committee for many years. He worked on Mine Rescue teams that responded to the 1984 Wilberg Mine Disaster, 1995 Solvay Mine Collapse, 2001 OCI Mine Belt Fire, and the 2007 Crandall Canyon Mine Collapse. Gary currently works at OCI Wyoming, L.P. as Safety Superintendent/Mine Rescue Coordinator and is President of the Southwest Wyoming Mutual Aid Association.
