A Serious Non-fatal Electrical Accident
On January 10, 2005 a roof bolter operator lost electrical power to his machine and went to reset the machine's circuit breaker at the section power center. He energized the circuit one time and the circuit breaker tripped. When he reset the circuit breaker the second time and energized the circuit, a flash came from the breaker, resulting in burns to his left hand.
- Never close a circuit breaker multiple times when the circuit is potentially faulted.
- Be sure to wear protective gloves when performing tasks that may cause injury to the hands.
- Always wear eye protection when performing tasks that may cause injury to the eyes.
- Position your body out of direct line with electrical circuits that are being energized.
