Officials in southwestern Illinois say a teenager was lucky to survive falling some 100 feet from an overlook near a quarry.
Valmeyer Fire Chief Floyd Floarke says the accident happened Sunday when the hiker stopped to take pictures from the overlook.
That's when soil and rock softened by recent rains collapsed beneath his feet, sending him tumbling about 50 feet before he hit something, then fell another 50 feet.
Floarke says the teen's companions called rescuers.
Floarke says he sustained several injuries but was able to speak with rescuers. He was taken to a hospital by helicopter.
The victim's name hasn't been released. He's believed to be from Marissa or New Athens.
