METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On September 21, 1995, a front-end loader operator was
killed at a clay pit. The victim was cleaning out the
scrubber. Another employee was working with a sledge
hammer about 20 feet above the victim. The sledge hammer
slipped out of the employee's hand and hit the victim on
the head causing him to fall 14 feet to the ground. He
died from the head injury. This is the 33rd fatality
reported in calendar year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal
mining industries. As of this date in 1994, there were 31
fatalities reported in these industries. This death is
the first fatality classified as handtools this year.
There were no handtools fatalities during the same period
in 1994.
