METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On October 6, 1995, a quarryman with 8 months of mining
experience was killed at a granite quarry. The employee
was drilling plug holes into a granite block to allow the
insertion of splitting wedges. An explosion occurred when
he drilled into a charged hole that did not detonate
during a previous planned blast. He died from sustained
injuries. This is the 37th fatality reported in calendar
year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As
of this date in 1994, there were 32 fatalities reported in
these industries. This death is the first fatality
classified as explosives and breaking agents this year.
There were two explosives and breaking agents fatalities
during the same period in 1994.
