METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On December 12, 1995, a dredge operator with two years of
mining experience was killed at a sand and gravel
operation. The employee was in a johnboat attempting to
remove an obstruction from the suction digger on the
dredge and fell into the water. He was not wearing a life
jacket, and he drowned. This is the 47th fatality
reported in calendar year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal
mining industries. As of this date in 1994, there were 40
fatalities reported in these industries. This is the 2nd
fatality caused by drowning this year. There were no
drownings during the same period in 1994.
