METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On November 30, 1995, a mill operator with 3 months of mining experience was killed at a sand and gravel operation. The employee was shoveling dirt and suffered herniated disks. On September 30, 1996, he was admitted to the hospital for surgery to correct the herniated disks. He died on October 4, 1996, from complications from the surgery. This is the 53rd fatality reported in calendar year 1995 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. There were 40 fatalities reported in these industries in 1994. This death is the 1st fatality classified as handling material this year. There were no handling material fatalities during the same period in 1994.
