COAL MINE FATALITY - On Wednesday March 20, 1996, a scoop operator was
utilizing a scoop, cleaning loose coal beneath and around a mobile bridge section of a
continuous haulage system. During the process, the scoop trammed under the bridge section
and the scoop operator's head struck the mobile bridge, resulting in fatal injuries.
This is the tenth coal mine fatality in 1996. As of March 20 of last year, there had been
5 fatalities. This death is the third classified as POWERED HAULAGE in 1996.
