COAL MINE FATALITY - On Thursday, August 15, 1996,
a general laborer was shoveling loose coal along the inby rib of the
crosscut that had recently holed-through into the entry. The recently
mined area was unsupported, however the laborer continued shoveling into
the area. An 11-foot long by 2 to 8-foot by 5 inches thick slab of
drawrock fell in the unsupported area, crushing the laborer.
This is the 20th coal mine fatality in 1996. As of August 15
of last year, there had been 25 fatalities. This death is the third
classified as FALL OF ROOF in 1996.
