METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On February 15, 1996, a plant operator with 15 years of mining experience was killed at a limestone quarry. The employee had ridden on a front-end loader to the fueling station. The loader operator reportedly waited a few minutes after the victim had dismounted, and then started backing the loader. A truck driver who had just pulled away from the fueling station saw the loader back over the employee. The victim died from crushing injuries. This is the seventh fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were also seven fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the fourth fatality classified as powered haulage this year. There were three powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1995.
