METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On March 19, 1996, an electrician with seven years of mining experience was killed at a copper pit. The employee was driving his pick-up truck trying to pass a moving 240-ton haulage truck near a load-out area. The haulage truck driver received a call from the dispatcher to go to a different load-out area just as the pick-up truck was passing him. The haulage truck driver turned to the right and ran over the pick-up truck. The victim died from crushing injuries. This is the eighth fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 12 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the fifth fatality classified as powered haulage this year. There were also five powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1995.
