METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On April 3, 1996, a loader operator with four years of mining experience was killed at a zinc mine. The employee was mucking in a gallery of the mine using a front-end loader. A witness saw the loader in motion at the gallery with no operator onboard. The employee was found dead in the gallery. It is believed that he was run over by the loader. This is the tenth fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 13 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the sixth fatality classified as powered haulage this year. There were also six powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1995.
