METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On April 23, 1996, an equipment manager with 15 years of mining experience was killed at a crushed stone quarry. The employee was tramming uphill with a rubber-tired crane. He came to a stop then started backing the crane down the road. When the crane reached the bottom of the road, the two right tires ran onto a mound of dirt that had been piled alongside the road. The crane rocked from side to side then rolled over on its left side smashing the cab. The victim died from crushing injuries. This is the 14th fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 15 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the second fatality classified as machinery this year. There were also two machinery fatalities during the same period in 1995.
