METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On May 28, 1996, a company vice president with seven years of mining experience was killed at a sandstone quarry. The victim and his brother were taking a break after hand selecting some large decorative rocks and loading them into a front-end loader bucket. A rock fell from an approximately 30-foot high side wall they were standing next to, glancing off one brother and fatally injuring the other. This is the 23rd fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 19 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the first fatality classified as fall of face/highwall this year. There were three fall of face/highwall fatalities during the same period in 1995.
