METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On July 8, 1996, a mechanic with five years of mining experience was killed at a limestone quarry. The employee had just finished replacing the fuel injectors on the 1977 35C Wabco haul truck which was parked outside the door of the shop. He was positioned on the front of the truck adjusting the engine when the truck lunged forward smashing through the shop door and coming to rest against the shop wall about 30 feet away. The victim was found pinned between the truck and the shop wall. He died from crushing injuries. This is the 27th fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 21 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the tenth fatality classified as powered haulage this year. There were eight powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1995.
