METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On October 4, 1996, a weighmaster with 12 years of mining experience was killed at a limestone quarry and plant. There were no witnesses to the accident. It is believed that the victim was attempting to either set or release the brakes on the open-top rail cars which were to be taken to the plant for loading. He apparently fell between the rail cars as he was found lying across the tracks pinned by the wheel of a rail car. He died from crushing injuries. This is the 38th fatality reported in calendar year 1996 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1995, there were 37 fatalities reported in these industries. This death is the sixth fatality classified as slip/fall of person this year. There were five slip/fall of person fatalities during the same period in 1995.
