COAL MINE FATALITY - On Thursday July 31, 1997, in Perry County, Kentucky, a truck driver was fatally injured while operating a large rock truck. The driver was hauling refuse to an open pit dump area at night. The dumping point was not protected by an adequate berm. The truck backed over the top of the dump, rolled over and continued down the loose material for approximately 330 feet. The truck driver was thrown from the truck and received fatal injuries.

This is the 21st coal mine fatality in 1997. As of July 31th of last year there had been 19 fatalities. This death is the sixth classified as POWERED HAULAGE in 1997.
