METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On February 17, 1997, a truck driver (contractor employee) with 20 years of mining experience was killed at a sand and gravel operation. There were no witnesses to the accident. The employee had parked his truck on the side of the roadway leading to a stockpile waiting in line to be loaded with material. He apparently got out of his truck and was run over by another truck hauling material from the mine. He was found dead lying next to his truck. This is the 11th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were seven fatalities reported in these industries. This is the sixth fatality classified as powered haulage in 1997. There were four powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1996.
