METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On February 24, 1997, a truck driver was killed at a sand and gravel operation. The employee drove his truck into a pond about 1/4 mile beyond the scale where he was to have his truck weighed. The truck came to rest on the driver's side in about 3-feet of water. The victim was pinned by the steering wheel and drowned. This is the 13th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were seven fatalities reported in these industries. This is the eighth fatality classified as powered haulage in 1997. There were four powered haulage fatalities during the same period in 1996.
