METAL/NONMETAL MINE FATALITY - On March 13, 1997, a contractor foreman with 35 years of mining experience was killed at a gold development operation. The foreman was fatally injured when the 3/4-ton pickup truck he was driving overtravelled the roadway and rolled down the side of a mountain approximately 90 feet, to the next lower roadway. This is the 16th fatality reported in calendar year 1997 in the metal and nonmetal mining industries. As of this date in 1996, there were eight fatalities reported in these industries. This is the ninth fatality classified as powered haulage in 1997. There were four fatalities under this classification during the same period in 1996.
